Julie Plec Dishes on Whether Alaric Is Integral or Expendable

When it comes to The Vampire Diaries, we’re always on our toes. To paraphrase Forrest Gump, TVD is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you’re gonna get.

One thing that took us majorly by surprise was Klaus’ early arrival in the form of an unsuspecting Alaric. Not that we’re complaining — we’ve been dying to catch a glimpse of the baddie for months now. TVD producer Julie Plec dished that giving viewers a taste of Klaus — and a bigger bite of Matt Davis’ acting skillz — was the main motivation. “It felt so good because it lets him show off a bit, because he’s so good, and it lets our audience be shocked by an unexpected development, and it’s giving us a glimpse into who Klaus is before we even get to meet Klaus, which I also love,” she says.

But what does it all mean for Alaric’s future? Will he ever return to his vamp-kicking, bloodsucker-hunting self? “When [Matt Davis] would ask, ‘What are you gonna do with Alaric?’ I always told him, ‘We’re either going to make you a gloriously integral character that the show can’t live without, or we’re gonna build you up magnificently and kill you epicly.’ I won’t tell you which way that goes, but that’s the promise I made to him,” she says.

Oy! With so many characters about to croak, we’re not so sure it isn’t the latter. Is it too late to start a “Save Alaric” petition?
