Are foldable/flexible displays ready? Strange that Xerox shut down Gyricon. I wonder if this product could actually, be sold to Borders and Barnes and Nobles. When you walk into the store instead of seeing paperback and hardbound books, you see hunreds of thousands of these on shelves. This could totaly change the way the publishing/library system works. You have a few of these flexible OLED displays that you just bring or rent from your local library or the book store and then you just go back or download a new one. The only problem is that there would have to be a simple way to charge these since it would be crazy to just stick them in thousands of bases, need to be as easy as slipping them into the shelf. So, if they created som sort of mat like SplashPower they would charge through the plastics. So, you could have these wonderfully moddern bookshelves that actually were splashpowered...And since covers sell books when and individual picked up one of these new Apple ibooks the cover art would have an animation sequence not just a static image. I can just see it now all these ladies picking up and seeing Fabio flexing his muscles on Appple's newest Ibook Ereader with it's flexible OLED display.

Uh, yes really. I deal with manufacturers professionally. Unless something is labor intensive and low value added (like clothing,) the only reason to manufacture in China is for the currency exchange rates and lax environmental laws.

Why do you think Haier, a Chinese company, is profitably manufacturing in South Carolina?

So explain the 920,000 workers FoxConn employs.

Clearly, something in manufacturing gadgets and electronics, which is FoxConn's primary business, requires a lot of labor or else they wouldn't be employing close to a million people!

Well it sounds like Apple wants to release all of their iOS devices (the iPad, iPod and iPhone) at the same time, a month or two before christmas, and a month or two after their new iOS release.

That way, they can make everything uniform.

There is no advantage to Apple to do this. In fact it would be a huge disadvantage:

    1) they would become a "black friday" company where the majority of their profit and cash flow comes from one quarter of the year;

    2) they would have to hire more engineers as they wouldn't be able to shift them from other less pressing projects as they do now b/c everything would be shipping in the same time frame;

    3) there would be less PR "boom" throughout the year because Apple would basically blow its yearly product wad in the span of a couple months. Out of sight, out of mind. Apple needs to always been in people's head, waiting for the next big announcement. Don't want to kill the Big Mo.

What it sounds like is Apple doesn't want to release iPhone 5 this summer b/c what it really wants the iPhone 5 to be won't be ready and they are not going to rush to market like they did the iPhone 4. Lesson learned.

i like iTunes 7 but have 2 questions

First i bought some music off itunes which i notices is the Clean version of the album. i didn't mean to buy these its just the clean vs explicity signs are too subtle. Can i get these changed.

And second, What about the shows i already bought, can they be converted to the higher res. cos that would suck otherwise.

    lol... Comments are priceless:

No kidding -- kinda reads like the iPad comments from last year, except instead of six pages there are probably hundreds for iPad. Weird looking at those forum posts and not recognizing any of the posters and seeing some labeled as "guest".

Some guy named "Beholder of Truth" really nailed it on why the iPod would be revolutionary. People probably called him an "Apple Fanboy" or whatever the 2001 equivalent of that was (one guy called him a "Tool").

    Very amusing reading those comments.

    Both of you are wrong.

Apple is a vertical systems integrator and vendor. They sell an vertically integrated solution that includes both software and hardware. They've been like this since the 70s, back when it was in-style.

These days, these types of vendors are rare. IBM still is with some POWER machines running AIX, HP has their Itanium/HP-UX systems and of course Oracle and the SPARC/Solaris boxes, but of course, these are mostly big-Iron Unix solutions, which is about the only place you'll find vertical solutions anymore.

Apple probably is the last of the consumer vendors doing vertical integration.

I could not agree more. They have been very good at slowly moving more and more of their needs in-house. Their ability to produce their own chips was a brilliant move. I would bet real money you will continue to see them move farther into this area. Clouds, chips, and software give them quite a powerhouse of ability.

Oh come on. How often do we actually have to access our optical drives? While you may do so often, many of us almost never do and would be happy to attach an external drive every now and then or even access the disc we need over the network.

The optical drive in my laptop broke a few months ago. I haven't missed it much. The one time I did need it, I hooked up my external drive, so it is necessary to have one.

I don't recall massive outcry from the devs on those other platforms. Why do you think that is?

Um, the same sort of NDA that Apple had in the beta phase of their developer's program?

Oh dang, these firmware updates make me nervous... so im going to wait and let others be the guinea pig.

No way I'm going to do this update. This will not benefit me in any way whatsoever. At most, it'll ignore any "true" problem and not shut down when necessary. I won't install this update for like 6 months to see if this happens to others. Why should I install it when I don't even have this RSS issue, right? It'll just create a safety hole in my system.

After applying the update, it seems like it's running cooler. I'm getting 53-54C now, when normally it's 58-59.

Ah yes, let these types of posts begin. ;)

I really love these new iPod nanos. They look so nice in color! I would love to have a green one, but I don't need it. I'm waiting for the true iPod video to sell my 5G and buy one of those instead. :D

Overall, nice keynote! I have to say, though... the new Dock icon for iTunes is pretty ugly. Its interface is cool and all, but I'm going to have to get used to the "non-Aqua" feel it has. The third view mode (albums on a rack) is awe-inspiring, though. I laughed with excitement when I first saw it. :p

i don't know why anyone is complaining that the MB wasn't upgraded to meet the specs of the MBP. we're talking entry level after all, and have to give apple something to justify the price differential to the pro. me, this is just what i was waiting for. c2d with added memory to boot. if i needed more features, graphics, etc., (*and if i could afford it) i'd buy the pro, but i don't. with this upgrade, i can finally retire my performa 6400/g3 sonnet, and have something that will serve me for many years. as soon as the store comes back up, i'm buying.

I had a small kernel of hope that they'd ditch the integrated GPU, but I sort of knew it wouldn't happen...

Still, this is a very nice machine, probaby the best iBook ever. The C2D is so powerful compared to the G4 it's mind boggling.

finally! I'm waiting to hand my money over for a mac pro, but this is good too. It'd be nice if Apple still saw the Mac as its primary business, but we can't all have what we want..

This attitude is crap! The chips suitable for these machine have barely been on the market and you seem to think it justifies throwing that attitude around. It isn't just Intel either as Apple has to implement a new GPU plan and get all of the new OS components working.

It is far better for the user that Apple takes it's time here to do the system right. Further I suspect part of the hold up is the next release of Snow Leopard an update everybody will want. You do want SL to improve in a positive manner don't you?

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

As an aside I've seen a few posts already from people crying about recently purchased MBPs and the expected soon update. Either get with it or shut up folks. It is not a mystery that a new generation of MBPs are coming. Thus the implication that you really needed those new machines, so these new machines really mean nothing. Otherwise you spent your money on a lark and deserve the frustration you have.

In any event I'm kinda interested in what the Mini might turn into. With the desktops so far ahead of this machine again there is plenty of room for a very significant update. They could turn that optical free model into one hot box with the right chipset.

Over-the-air updates over the cellular network is a fine idea, but it's just not that important. That's not really a capability I value at all. Nice, but so what?

What Apple should have done a long time ago is made it possible to update and sync iDevices over WiFi. There is enough bandwidth on WiFi to do all of that just fine. And there is no technical reason it can't be done.

This. I could care less about wireless updating of iOS, it's not that frequent to be an issue. What I would like is to be able to sync up calendars, contacts, etc without having to plug into my iMac. What would really be nice is cloud syncing of my calendars (through iCal) but that would just be a plus.

Im surprised we havent seen anyone ranting about the fact that there were no obvious hints to UI changes in the preview. Even the desktop wallpaper was the same as tiger.

Yeh suspiciously 'samey' :D I think it will change when Leopard finally ships. Did you notice iChat UI had changed ;)

Also I think FrontRow will be bluetooth enabled (with new remote) when Leopard ships so MacPros can use it.

As well as some REALLY cool stuff that will take OSX even further in front of Vista.

Oh and a feature I requested by Apple Feedback is in Leopard. Woohoo!!! Its only the pixel dimensions when dragging out a screenshot but i asked for it. Maybe a few others did too? :D
