    1TB total is often enough. I have just over that much that much spread over 3 external drives (2 320GB freeagent Go 1st generations, 1 500GB G-Drive Mini 7200rpm). That will fit a lot of pictures. My drives aren't full yet, and in fact I probably have only 500GB of space for pictures, as I duplicate the contents of the drives as a basic backup. (In other words- dont rely on a single drive).

    When you're just starting out you'll take a lot of pictures, and I mean a lot. But over time once you learn your camera and photographic techniques that you like, you'll be able to get that 'perfect shot' with just one, so you won't be taking half as many pictures and that will take half as much space. (This is coming from a guy who took 7400 pictures in just two weeks in NYC and Washington DC).

    I wouldn't be able to say how much capacity you need, however, large hard drives are pretty cheap so I'd probably get a bit more than you think you need. Remember there's no need for a fast HDD, maybe something like a WD caviar green?

    This not a hardware issue. It works the same on both models of iPad. It is a feature of iOS, if you have a current version.

    I have to disagree with this. On my iPad 1 when I put the device in mute it's in mute. The iPad 2 when it's in mute things like calendar, email are muted but apps override mute. You have to turn the volume all the way down. Shouldn't be this way. Mute should be mute.

    It is a collector's item but I doubt you will be able to get much for it (esp since it has no HD). Many people just don't have space for these old Macs (but I would pay good money for a IIfx)....

    OK, the BBC have a super res photo of the scene in The Mall yesterday.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-13200114

    So far (in the press area) I can see two iPhones and 1 iPad being conspicuously used. How many can you see?

    And the harder spot - can you see any Android devices!!!

    Yes, and that got me looking for a link to "contribute." But I couldn't find one. :D

    What happened to the positive/negative rating system? Did its value go from worthless to pathetically useless? :rolleyes:

    Still, I liked the ratings, it gave an overall sense to the story (sometimes).

    Besides that, A+ on the site so far.

    I'd change the hard drive out too. I've bought six G3 iMacs in the last few years and the hard drive of every one has died after a few months of proper use if it wasn't dead already.

    Give it a speedy 80-120gb drive and 512mb of RAM and it'll speed up to no end. They're still very usable computers!

    Even though FCPX Was just announced there was no word on the other FCS apps....

    Well, as I understand the different rumors and announced features of FCPX, the new version has absorbed some of the tools in the other apps. For the rest, I doubt that they release the new FCPX without releasing the other updated sister apps at the same time, perhaps sold separately - but not likely that the full suite will go for over the current price.

    IMO, waiting a couple of months would be a safe bet - specially when FCPX is a completely revamped version with very good upgrades. And, if for any reason one thinks FCPX is inferior in any way, you will be able to get the current version at a much lower price then.

    Just my 2c

    cheers!

    This discussion has me a bit confused. I don't own an ipod, so forgive my lack of knowledge.

    1. If I buy itms tracks, can I burn them to a CD and play them on a CD player?
    2. If I own a CD, can rip it to itunes and then play it on an ipod?

    I will buy either a base 15" or the high end 15." The 17" MBP is awesome and my current laptop has a 17" screen, but IMHO, the MBP 17" is pricey. Although, I have been known to contradict my initial thoughts regarding an expensive purchase. ;)

    If you plan to process and edit images on the road, th extra screen real-estate will be well-worth it. If not, just get a very good external monitor to use at home.

    Its not going to work that way. cablevision fixed their 1.0.1 app that it doesn't connect via ipad's VPN. how is it going to work while being tethered to your iphone?
    He's thinking that the app checks if there is a VPN connection on the iPad. If the connection is done on an iPhone then tethered to the iPad it wouldn't see a VPN connection on the iPad.

    I was working at my job at a camera store; I had just pulled in around when it started happening I guess. I remember parts of the day vividly...I even remember what I was listening to on the stereo on the way in. We didn't know what was going on until a coworker that was off that day called (I took the phone call) and told us. We pretty much watched the TV all day after that.

    Same for MacBytes: "Macintosh News, Headings, and Links".

    An aside: The Apple home page, hot news page, and hardware and software pages together use the word "Macintosh" only once! But people browsing Apple's site probably know what Mac stands for.

    Good thought, but I don't think this is necessary. When I search in Google, I get this:

    "Mac Rumors: Apple Mac Rumors and News You Care About [...]

    Description: Apple news and rumors with user contribution and commentary."

    People who are looking for Mac things should be able to figure it out, in my opinion. If they're looking for something else, they should be able to figure out that it's not the right place.

    I've been spoiled with the ease of use of Time Machine and CCC. Since I'm running a windows partition on my desktop, what options are available that offer similar types of functionality.

    I'm looking for a windows application to backup and/or clone my windows drive.

    I used to use norton ghost back in the day but the reviews found on amazon are less then stellar.

    Any suggestions or recommendations?

    That line looks to be outside the view volume.

    The default view volume is a cube with sides of 2 with the camera at the center pointing towards the negative z direction. The default projection is ortho.

    Unless if you changed the defaults, 180,15,0 and 10,45,0 are completely outside of the view volume.

    Try something inside, for example:

    glBegin(GL_LINES);
    glVertex3f( 0.0f, 0.0f, 0.0f);
    glVertex3f(-1.0f,-1.0f, 0.0f);
    glEnd();

    You should also put in the translation by -6 if you are using a perspective camera.

    I know he wants a tv in the front lobby but I think he wants to be able to choose between the tv audio or music up there. In the back he wants to be able to play pandora from one of the macs to all the individual rooms with a volume control in each room. I believe this is new construction so there is nothing existing to go from.

    Thanks for the help.

    I was at work, and someone said that the news was reporting that a plane had hit one of the Towers. We all thought maybe a small plane had lost control or something. A little bit later, someone said the other tower got hit. Then we knew. We had a small set playing ABC, with at least 50 people hunched around it at all times throughout the day. I saw the first tower fall live. After the Pentagon was hit, and there were reports of a 4th plane still in the air, quite a few were freaking out, as we are located between PA. and DC.
    I had to stay at work. Got home around 6.00p and stayed horrifically glued to the boob tube all night long.

    Blue, I was looking at the clock and thinking of starting a thread just like this one. Glad I checked new posts first.

    (1) Not even close to every machine ships with a productivity suite... in fact, if you look closely at what you're paying for when you buy most PC machines, those products that "ship standard" with your fancy new PC are built into the price. Most customizable online shops (Dell, et al.) allow you to remove that software and lower the price. So obviously, they are not free.

    (2) iWork is undoubtably being groomed as a direct competitor to Office. There's no disputing that. It CURRENTLY is a replacement for AppleWorks, because it's still young and undeveloped in places, but it would be insane for Apple not to try and pursue part of the Office marketshare. It's an untapped resource, and frankly the Office programs are not very well constructed (with the exception of Excel). Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint are pretty lousy, and while Access is solid, it's certainly not leaps and bounds better than (PageMaker) <-- EDIT: Sorry, meant FileMaker.

    (3) Bundling software, and then looking for profit on the backend with upgrades is a reasonable answer to the question. There's something to be said for that. But in the end, I think you're comparing Apples and Oranges. While at current, iWork is undeveloped, it is (as I said) being groomed to be a full suite of productivity Apps. iLife is a wonderful package of Apps, but they do not replace Pro Apps. iPhoto is garbage compared to Aperture or Photoshop. Pages is certainly not garbage compared to Word, and Keynote is already a much better App than PowerPoint. So I think there's a flaw in the argument here...

    This impresses me as distinctions without much a difference. The iLife suite now consists of several well-developed applications all of which are bundled. They didn't necessarily start out mature but they grew into maturity. (iPhoto was never conceived as a replacement for Photoshop btw.) Apple got Mac users accustomed to using them and can now successfully charge for upgrades. They could do the same with iWork.

    I'm actually interested in the charging capability only. I've got an old original iphone in my glove box with an Audi cable input that runs the ipod function and contains my source music. I use my iphone 4 as a phone only and it runs in the car on bluetooth through the same system.

    All I need is a neat, clean looking solution for the phone to keep it secure, eye handy and charged.

    Thanks, again.
