Will you two just get together already?
Gossip Girl’s Chuck (Ed Westwick) has never been a boy scout. In fact, we love him for his dark side — his schemes, his self-loathing, the way he uses threesomes with stewardesses like other people use therapy.

As we near the end of Season 4, our favorite bad boy is hurting. Terribly. Usually the only person he can turn to is Blair (Leighton Meester), but right now he’s in too dark a place for that to be a viable option.

There’s dark, and then there’s dark. In this week’s “The Princesses and the Frog,” Chuck drunkenly crashes Prince Louis’s party and publicly embarrasses Blair. But it gets worse. When Blair goes to his apartment to tell him about her engagement to Louis, he reacts in a way we don’t see coming. After telling Blair, “You’ll never marry anyone else, you’re mine,” he grabs her and forces her down onto a bench. When she tells him it’s over, he smashes his fist through a window above her head, and shattered glass cuts her cheek.

Could this be it — the dude fight we've all been waiting for?!
Sure, we don’t watchGossip Girl because the characters are great role models — but that’s abusive behavior, and the fact that the show’s writers placed a couple we’re supposed to be rooting for in that situation is disturbing. The last time Chuck behaved this badly was early in Season 1, when he attackedJenny (Taylor Momsen). We always thought the writers regretted that scene, because they gradually turned him into a character we can love, despite his occasional (or frequent) slipups. If they were going to pretend it hadn’t happened, we were happy to do the same.

With only two episodes left in Season 4, one can only ask where — and how — we go from here? Gossip Girl producer Josh Savage has teased a Chair reconciliation, and we find ourselves torn. At the moment, we’d rather see Blair get together with her doorman than have a gushy reunion with Chuck. If we had a friend in real life whose boyfriend did what Chuck did, not only would we tell her to dump him ASAP — we’d beg her never to see him again. OK, perhaps we’re not so torn...

Even if Chuck never lays his hands on B from here on out, what do you think...
