OJuice (http://www.ojuice.net/) is the authority on all things demo. Check out Nectarine (http://www.scenemusic.net/) for streaming scenemusic from the old legends and the new!

I am really looking forward to Renoise 1.5 final. I hope it takes them less time to release than between the last two releases. Looks really spiffy, though! Now if only it supported Audio Units...

They both sound way too expensive for the specs involved. You should be able to find a DP 2.0ghz Powermac G5 for around $200-250 these days. An iMac G4 should not sell for over $100 imo, unless its the rare 20" model.

If you are short on cash but still want some power, look towards the higher end Powermac G4's. A DP 1.25 or 1.4ghz powermac will outperform the SP Powermac G5, and can usually be had for about $150.

Just arrived and by best guess there are around 75 people so far. I am sure there is plenty and waiting here is pretty silly but nothing else goin on today so what the hell. Least I have a good chance of getting something I want rather than having to up or downgrade my choice. T-minus 4 hours.

    Hoo boy.

There is no such thing as a Zip or a Jaz drive that comes native with Firewire, or USB 2.0. (theoretically, someone may have put an IDE drive into a Firewire box, but I don't know if the drivers would support that.)

The iomega Zip is a flexible vinyl disk cartridge, and came in two versions, 100 Mb and 250 Mb. Althought the 250 can read and write 100 Mb cartridges it is deadly slow doing so. Zip drives came in Internal and External SCSI-1, external parallel (PC) interface, internal ATA and IDE (the early ATA internals are not Mac compatible) and external USB-1. External Zip drives only have one interface -- Either SCSI OR USB, not both.

The iomega Jaz is a hard-platter disk cartridge and came in two versions, a 1 Gb and a 2 Gb. Most Jaz drives are external, and have a SCSI-2 connector (high density) I have never seen a USB Jaz. Zip and Jaz are completely incompatible with each other.

The SyQuest EZFlyer 3.5" hard-platter cartridge drive (135 Mb and 230 Mb versions) are completely different from the Zip and Jaz, as are the SyQuest 5.25" 44, 88 and 200 Mb drive, the first 3.5" SyQuest (200 Mb?) and the SyJet 1.5 Gb drive - There was one other SyQuest product - Shark? Sharq? 1 Gb - which was only ever released in a PC version as far as I remember.

The imation 120 Mb Superfloppy is incompatible with Zip, it used special 3.5" floppy disks but could also read 1.44 3.5" floppies - most of the time.

The Castlewood Orb drive was a hard disk cartridge drive similar to the Jaz and SyJet which the blank media was never available for, and it died an ignominious death.

Okay, so I've restored the drive to one partition, but now when i try to download the window support software I get an error message telling me "the support software is not available".

Surely it's not usually this difficult?

Oh - that's been a bug that's been around since they allowed for direct download. For some reason it simply doesn't work. You have to use the software located on your Snow Leopard disk. (Or disk 1 of the grey disks you got with your computer). You do this from the Windows side after you install XP. Note that the most recent models do not support XP because the component manufacturers didn't release drivers.

So, I picked up a set and thought I might post up some thoughts here in case you are thinking about buying a pair.

First impressions are quite good. The packaging lends itself to a quality air. When you first try out the headphones you'll notice the very subtle looks. Personally, I think its brilliant to have a $200 pair of headphones not draw too much attention. So, I approve. There's a carrying case, a few different tips to help you get the feel you are comfortable with.

On to the sound, before you even turn them on you'll notice these block a lot of background noise when properly inserted. Etymotic claims roughly 40db of noise reduction and I believe it. If you aren't noticing this then you probably don't have them far enough into your ears or you have on tips that don't fit properly.

How do they sound when you start playing music? Well, I've listened to a variety of music through them ranging from Jazz to Blue, Rock to Metal, Club to Pop, Country to Western so far and have gotten a good feel for their style of sound reproduction. Its very restrained and accurate as is fitting for in ear monitors. These are not Beats by Dre and you will not be impressed if you connect them to a low quality source or you play poorly stored music. Now, if you have a good source and good music you'll start to hear the music the way it was recorded. Meaning a well engineered track will reveal things you've never heard before and a poorly recorded track will sound like warm dog poop.

Whether thats appealing to you or not really depends on the kind of music you want to hear so I'm not going to pass judgement on it other than to say that I like accurate monitors and these are just great.

If you read online you'll hear a lot of reviews on these and other Etymotic's that complain about a lack of bass response so I think a few comments on that are needed. If you compare these to a pair of Bose, Beats, Sony's and the like you'll not be impressed with the bass since they are accurate. The Etymotic's will not over-emphasize the bass and drown out the mids and highs. You'll hear a nicely balanced bass, mids and treble. I've got a pounding house beat going as I type this and it just rocks albeit softly. Its also a very accurate bass. I've picked up a few things in well known songs that I've never hear. Now, I'm used to that in the vocals or instruments but I was a bit surprised to have that happen with the bass line.

All in all I'm impressed and happy. They are a bit pricey at $198 including tax from my local Apple store but if they last they will be well worth it.

If you have any questions or comment post below and I'll try to respond quickly.

    Good work!
I myself am about to help another friend return to the folds.
She used to use a Mac years ago I believe, and I've been re-educating her over the past few weeks. She i believe is now keen to buy a Powerbook!

Only dilemma for me is to decide whether to help her buy a refurb or new one!

    MacBook Airs:
    extremely portable
    slower processors than the iMac
SSD is faster than the iMac's traditional hard drive, but less storage capacity
memory can't be upgraded after purchase
    no Thunderbolt ports

    iMacs:
    not very portable
    faster processors than the Air
traditional hard drive is slower than the Air's SSD, but has more storage capability
memory can be upgraded after purchase
    has Thunderbolt ports

Either machine is capable of photos and videos.

The iMac is going to have a faster processor, so it's going to be faster at CPU intensive tasks, like converting/export video. For me, I don't do these tasks often.

The Airs have the solid-state drives, which are insanely quick. This can make the Air feel like a faster-overall system when doing normal daily tasks, like surfing the web, email, iTunes, etc.

There's really no clear-cut answer. You're going to have to figure out if you need something portable or not, and if you want a Mac with a faster processor or a faster hard drive.

For me, the slower processor of the Air was outweighed by the very fast SSD. I'll gladly wait longer for the Air to complete CPU intensive tasks that I do a few times a month in exchange for doing the tasks I do daily much quicker than any other Mac I've ever used.

Ok cheers guys for that, so is it worth it for being a memory stick and a iPod?
So what does the "i" in imac and iPod stand for and the "e" in eMac???

    i = inspissated

    e= enantiomorphic

hence the inspissated pod, or the enanthemated mac

    <ignore>Permissions should be 744 I guess (all-read-read), maybe 755.</ignore>

.htaccess files are inherited. Put one in your root directory, and all directories will be 'protected'. :)
You may of course over-write the inherited .htaccess parameters for a given directory with a new .htaccess file. In turn, this new file will cascade down to all sub-directories.

i had a similar problem with my nikon 50mm, inconsistent focus and hunting for focus, even after i locked it. Problem was, I thought i locked it, but i didn't check the settings on the camera iteself. I was set up for continuous focus instead of single focus, which accounted for the lens hunting and refocusing everytime i tried to compose a shot.

not sure if this helps, but once i did realize my error of not resetting the camera for what i was trying to do, the problem was gone.

I've sold and bought a lot of stuff on Ebay including selling multiple Mac laptops. This situation besides being traumatic to the seller (or buyer depending on the situation) is very interesting as to how ebay will address it?

This was several years ago, but I have a friend who purchased a computer on ebay advertised with a specific graphic card. In reality the computer did not have the card that was advertised, but for some reason in the dispute, ebay sided with the seller saying the differences were not enough to warrant a return despite the card having 124MB VRAM instead of the advertised 256MB VRAM.

Despite my story above, what has bothered me about Ebay is that it has taken steps to be friendlier to buyers at the expense of sellers. For example, instead of allowing the seller to dictate the buyer pays for insurance as a term of the sale, Ebay has taken this away this choice from the seller.

If you have a piece of computer hardware, and you know what the serial number is, and you mail it off, what exactly prevents the buyer from switching computers and saying "you did not send me what you advertised" and asks for a refund? For this situation Ebay will have to develop a verifiable process because someone is being scammed.

The reverse is the seller lies about the computer and sends something other than what was advertised.

I want to know how the heck Ebay can determine who is telling the truth?

The worst thing about being the seller is that once your computer is in the buyer's hands, you no longer have any control over your computer. For the OP, at this point, I don't think there is anything you can do but contact ebay and discuss it with them. Someone else has your computer. Hopefully you documented what you sent. If so then the buyer is a crook. Hopefully you took several pictures to distinguish between what you sent and what the buyer says he got.

But does everyone see the dilemma? How does any 3rd party know what you really sent the buyer? This is going to make me do some research because I will be selling a laptop in the near future on ebay, that is if I can satisfy there is a means to verify what exactly has been mailed?

    Helpfull links anyone?
