Well, going on national TV and basically challenging the hacker community doesn't really qualify as obscure, now does it?

People keep mentioning this.. does anyone have a link to the add that specifically challenges hackers?

I assume the Merom is inside?

But these babies are gr8 value!

Luckily you don't have to choose for the 7300... you can get the better 7600 inside. Not brilliant, but it's better.

Apple is at the core a software company.

No, Apple is a hardware company that develops the OS that runs on its hardware.

...USA no longer manufactures except for our junky USA cars.

January 2011 marked the 18th straight month of growth in the US manufacturing sector, at the fastest rate in 7 years. Further, manufacturing created more jobs than were eliminated for the first time in more than a decade, and the number is likely to increase in 2011 (Wall Street Journal).

Not saying the situation is optimal, and we're not going back to an old-fashioned steel and coal economy anytime soon, it's just that the mythology has overtaken the facts.

I am surprised so many PCs are sold as it is. I wonder if people are happy with them or they just sit in a drawer or closet somewhere.

Macs aren't the answer to everyone's needs. Apple only have a touch over 4% of the worldwide market so do you think the other 96% of customers are sitting there head in hand wishing they had a Mac?

Apple have targeted the highly profitable premium home market and now dominate it. They aren't interested in the low end or business market because they don't need a huge market share to do well and are prepared to let their competitors fight amongst themselves for those lower margin sales.

I absolutley like this idea. Imagine college professors being able to produce podcast notes (some type of e-book podcast) and students being able to download them.

I also see it being useful for short things like Cliff Notes, written (typed) podcasts, concert programs, newspaper or magazine subscriptions but not front line books. Although, it could work in concert with Project Gutenberg or UPenn's online book programs. The extra screen real estate would be important.

So users on the subscription model get updated to the next version as part of their subscription? So if I purchase a subscription for a year of 5.5. and CS6 comes out in june, then for no extra cost I'm able to upgrade to CS6?

Unless I've missed something, which is entirely possible, the subscription model seems to be based around temporary folks or how often the packs will be upgraded.

I mean I have 3 macs with design premium CS4. Upgrading the 5.5 would cost $1,947 out right. But if I subscribe for $95/month * 3 macs, then that's $3,420 after one year.

However if I go the non-subscription route, and CS6 comes out in less than a year from the time I would have subscribed, it's the same $649/upgrade cost, and I purchase it....then subscribing would have been cheaper by about $470. But that seems like a lot of assumptions.

    YouTube uses Flash and H.264.

Look... All I know is, if a HUGE, INTERNATIONAL company like Apple can pull off their website without it which gets millions and millions of hits every day and is very well designed and media rich, there is no excuse!

Actually, Apple wants websites to use open standards such as HTML, which is not Apples software. Flash is proprietary and is certainly not a free market. You should cut down on the caffeine.

    is QuickTime an open standard?

I tried it out at the Apple Store today, and I think all the multitasking aides built into OS X (Spaces, Expose, four-finger gestures, etc) are enough to compensate for the small screen size. It's 1000x better than using XP on my 10" Dell netbook

Not to me. I need documents side by side, and browsers open next to documents to take notes from webcasts. My 13" mba did that just fine although it was more cramped than my HR mbp. the 10" netbook fad never caught on with me for this reason.

SZ--please explain. It seems that even a small increase in the mainstream would overshadow a large gain in niche markets. If Apple increases mainstream market share why do they need the niche markets?

I guess i was wrong with said niche markets.
what i mean is that as they expand their market share, they'll need to expand their product line, in order to entice customers toward their products. basically, if they have a product for every corner of their market, they'll likely increase their market share.

Hmmm, so I wonder what will the pricing be for those that don't jump to 5.5? Will 5 to 6 be priced the same as 5.5 to 6? What will be cheaper?

I looked at going from Master Collection CS 4 to CS 5.5, especially as I have a spare Mac license that I'd rather upgrade... that cost is $949.

    O U C H.

It's too early to say what CS5->CS6 will be; it could be the same $550 or it could be $950.

Future upgrades might just be the Web Premium package and sticking with the standard CS5 releases for the non-essential apps.

But, as they sell less, they'll just raise the prices again. As if that will magically increase market share in return...

This sounds to me like Wal-Mart might be angling to get in on the online movie store business. They're certainly not going to stop selling movies, but I can see them pressuring studios to partner with them (exclusively) for some sort of online download service.

As for Wal-Mart, the company, it's power and influence on business markets in this country is not so much a commentary on itself, but instead, on society. The fact is there are a lot of poor people in this country who need cheap goods and services and Wal-Mart affords that to them. You take that away and something else will replace it.

I like when Apple doesn't announce something, i like surprises.

One thing will Apple ever make a larger LCD display, or they will stay with the 30" for a while.

Seeing the iMac 24", instead of 23". Seems like Apple upto something.

Hopefully that something invovles isight/front row displays that are more reasonable in price.

Couldn't Facebook also approve all of their applications by default, and only be given access to a user's personal information by explicit consent of that user?

The problem is that Facebook has much more sensitive information in it than your iPhone address book card. Not only that but significantly MORE information in it.

It's difficult to compare the address book on your iPhone to that of your entire friends list, including possible relationships (family, friends, peers), your phone number(s), your friends phone number(s), their family members, my website address for both personal and professional uses, email addresses for personal and professional use, birthdates, favorites (books, music, movies), etc.

Think of how that could be used.

My iPhone address book card has my emails, address, phone numbers. While those are important it doesn't tell you nearly as much about me that could be used in extremely bad ways. Think more than spam and sales calls.

To me, this just feels like a slap in the face to ipad2 owners :(

And please don't tell me that I don't want a reasonable quality camera in my tablet. Just because you don't.

I would not be surprised if they fitted 1gb or memory in the next iPhone to as another punch in the guts to iPad buyers.

Nice quote on Engadget's website: "iWhore, therefore iPod."

I voted Negative because we all know Steve is furious that Microsoft is releasing a wireless MP3 player before Apple. The iP$d needs some serious revamping.

What exactly is 'wireless' about this MP3 player? Sharing songs three times doesn't count in my book. There's no wireless syncing, nor wireless connection to my stereo. What's the big deal again?
